Twins

I have birthday cards that I am going to send my twin brothers. Unfortunately, they will not reach them in time for their birthdays on July 3. Since I know they faithfully check this blog I figured I would show the birthday cards here.:) Besides that way you can see how "identical" these cards are--oh, and the twins too!:)

So happy birthday, Larry and Garry! I still don't who will get which card. Do either of you have a preference? Or maybe I should get my readers to vote on who gets which one.:)

Here are my brothers,,,

Bugs

On Friday I caught a bug. Headache, fever, sore throat, hacking cough, runny nose, even some mild nausea. Ughhhh! I hate getting sick. I must confess, I fell into poor me syndrome: why have I caught so many bugs this past year? I'm used to staying a healthy distance AWAY from doctors. Now it seems to be a common occurrence?! Poor me....

So this morning I went to the doctor. I love her; she keeps me laughing. But she thought maybe I had dengue, a virus caught from mosquitos. So they did bloodwork; they even did it twice to be sure, but no sign of dengue, and no sign of bacteria either. So I was diagnosed with "acute rhinopharyngitis", which translates into the common cold.:)

Now I have the following meds to help me:

Codyl cough syrup for my cough
comcol2.jpg

Arcoxia to reduce inflammation
comcol3.jpg

Tylenol for pain and fever
comcol4.jpg

Tussil for cough
comcol5.jpg

Fluimucil for runny nose
comcol6.jpg

Clarinase Repetabs for allergic rhinitis (so says the label)
comcol7.jpg

And all of the above came packaged in this nice "gift" bag.:)
comcol1.jpg

So hopefully with rest and a proper diet I can get back to normal once again. Thank God I don't have dengue.

Miss Potter

Tonight the REACH team and Aida and Reyna (interns) came to my apartment for pizza and a movie. That gang is TOO MUCH!!!:) That translates into "they are TONS of fun"!! I love hearing them interact.

We watched the movie Miss Potter, the story of Beatrix Potter's life. According to the movie, her children's books have become the best selling children's books of all time. It was a sweet movie with lots of "awww-ing" and "she ALWAYS makes that SAME face!" about the actress playing Miss Potter. I liked the movie, but I think I enjoyed hearing the REACHers' comments throughout just as much.:)

So, here are pics of the evening before the movie.

YUMMY pizza from The Pizza Company!

There's our movie! Or maybe it was one of the options, I don't know.

Here's the group! We could've just had a sleepover!:)

Bangkok Sights and Sounds

This evening after teaching at The Shelter, I stopped off at Tesco Lotus before taking the bus home. I love the Thai concoctions that most likely wouldn't be much of a hit in America; and I love the English words they use. Below is a picture of a new ice cream sundae offered at KFC. Notice the use of the word "freshy".:) I think what they mean is refreshing, but I'm not sure.:) My cardiologist called me "freshy" in the hospital after we had talked and joked around....??:)

Outside Lotus a clown was performing Isaan style. As it was getting dark, none of my still pictures turned out, but I do have a video.

As I took quite a few pictures (that didn't turn out) and a couple videos, I dropped a donation into his basket and then crossed the street to find another "performance" going on. This one was an elderly beggar man playing traditional music. Below is a picture that sorta turned out, and then a video clip as well.

Yes, I still struggle with the beggar dilemma; I suppose I always will. But I did drop a donation in this man's pink plastic bowl this time.

Ping Pong

Yesterday was the time I had hoped to hold a Bible study with available people. As it turned out, everyone was out of town for the weekend or longer, so no shows. But I had a good time at the worship service of Jai Samarn in Bangkok.

Then at 4 pm Gop came up to study English, and this time he brought his friend Ink, who is one of the landlord's sons. Teaching Gop is a challenge; he is so curious about everything and has a very short attention span. He is so funny running around my room when he should be sitting reading. He finds my stuffed elephant and squeezes it so its belly rumbles; then he sits on my poor little elephant and jumps up and down to give the appearance of passing gas. Then he finds my nice brown scarf and pulls it over his head like a bandit. Oh, and then there is my small flashlight which he confiscates and cheerily calls out one English word he remembers: "flashlight!".:) After that he feeds my fish. But somehow, one and a half hours later, we have managed to cover 4 or 5 pages of his English book from school. I must confess, that 1 1/2 hours is probably the longest 1 1/2 hours I experience each week.:) But Gop is so good natured, it makes up for the frazzled nerves.

At 6:30 Gop called me and invited me to supper down in the office. After eating supper together with the family, I discovered that Kitti built a basic ping pong table for the extra room. So I ended up playing ping pong with Gop for another hour or so. That was fun, but oh, so hot! There was no air conditioning, and we couldn't run the ceiling fan because it swayed the ping pong ball. So it was "sweat city", but it was fun--more vigorous exercise than I usually get here.

Once back in my room I called down to Kun on 4th floor, so she came up and we chatted until 10:30. She and her boyfriend were originally going to study English with me, but they have too much going and no time to study English. I am happy for the friendship though, and Kun is very patient in speaking Thai with me as well. She is a teacher by occupation, and it is easy to see that gift as she speaks with me, repeating or explaining words as necessary.

Another Day at the Shelter

Starting last week, my day for teaching at The Shelter was switched to Thursday, so last Thursday I made the 2-hour trip there once again. Eder, intern from Ecuador, and Efrain, intern from Nicaragua, accompanied me.

We had a scavenger hunt as part of class this time. We have been studying items found in the living room, kitchen, bathroom, and bedroom. If the object they needed to find was too big to carry, they were to draw a picture instead. Well, wouldn't you know it, Johnny decided to carry an armchair from the house to the classroom! Crazy guy! At any rate, I had a lot of fun watching them scurry around to find everything, and I think they had fun scurrying around!:)

After class, we stayed a little longer while they brought over a guitar and listened to Eder and Efrain play a couple Spanish songs. Then (of course:) it was time to take a few photos!

Efrain listens to King play a Thai song. King earlier was having a great time trying to learn the song Efrain played.

Walking Through My Day

Late this morning I taught Noy, the neighbor boy, for an hour and a half. He is one who has had very little training in Engish, so we are going through a picture dictionary and learning about telling time, and recognizing shapes and colors. After the lesson was finished, HE began instructing ME--in Thai--about various wats in the area. He used my whiteboard to write in Thai what he was saying and was actually a very good teacher. He had the patience to explain and repeat as often as needed.
Noy.jpg

After lunch I went grocery shopping at Lotus. As I was walking out with my purchases to catch a motorcycle taxi, I saw this group of Thai dogs. A very common sight in Thailand.:)
thai dogs.jpg

Also, as I was walking out, I noticed several workers pushing water around on the parking lot, presumably to get rid of it. I approached one young lady and asked if I might take her picture. She asked why, so I proceeded to tell her I like to show my family and friends life in Thailand, and she seemed OK with that. Her name is Daa; she is a real sweetheart like most Thais I have met.
dtaa1.jpg

I took this picture myself, and almost missed my lovely face.:)
dtaa2.jpg

After I arrived back home, I did a bit of reading; as time went on, it grew dark, and I looked out the window to see this:
sky1.jpg

sky2.jpg

sky3.jpg

Sure enough, it POURED down rain, lasting several hours. My wall and glass sliding doors still leak, so I have about 3 large towels sopping wet in my room right now. I have gotten used to that, though, so it's not that big of a deal anymore.:)

While it was still raining, I received a phone call regarding Nim, a new friend who wanted to come sit in on my English class tonight. Since she had never been here before, she wanted me to meet her at a soi approximately 15 minutes' walk away from here. I donned my umbrella and inched my way through the masses of street vendors on the sidewalk and the customers walking through with their umbrellas. Talk about having umbrella collisions....!:)

I arrived at the designated meeting place and waited as long as I felt I could before needing to return to let my students into my apartment. My new friend had not yet showed up, but no one else knew where I had gone. About 5 minutes after I returned to my room, Nim called me to let me know she was waiting for me. When she realized I couldn't come meet her, she managed to find my street, and then I went out to meet her to walk her back to my room.

I am beginning to think that my classes will never be the exact same people. Some people called and cancelled because of traffic jams caused by the rain and one person was back in her home province. But I had two regulars, Lak and Pen, and then Nim came as well as Gop, Lak's 12-year-old brother (those two came mostly to listen in).

Here is the group minus Lak, who is getting tired of my perpetual picture-taking and volunteered to take the picture for us.:)
tonitesclass.jpg

And finally, here is a picture of more FOOD! Nim brought the mixed fruit and sticky rice stuffed durian fruit. Durian is the fruit that smells REALLY bad. I've heard it is said that durian tastes like heaven but smells like, well, you know, that other place. I tried some of it, and with the sticky rice it wasn't too bad. It is certainly not number one on my list though.:)
fruitbrot.jpg

One more note: I offered tonight to study the Bible/eat lunch together on Sunday for anyone who is interested. No one committed, though one or two seemed mildly interested. I hope to invite a few more people before Sunday. Feel free to pray that God would have His way in this. Thanks!

Gop

Gop is quite the guy. Today he came to learn English at 4:00 and never left till 7:00. No, we didn't study English that whole time. He is much to active and curious for that. His mom, Ruung, came up about 6:00, after we had already finished studying English, and she brought supper with her. Then we ate and chatted together for a while, after which she left, telling me to send Gop down when he started giving me a headache.:)

I had taken a couple pictures of Gop with my cute stuffed elephant that my dear friends Twila and Laura gave me. Then Gop decided to take over the camera. Oh boy, look out!

Here's Gop with my elephant.

Yep, he even ran out on my balcony and snapped a couple pics of my cute little guppies! Then he decided it was time to feed them too.:)

After Gop's mom exited, he decided it was time to play on my computer. But he wanted me to watch everything he did, so I sat next to him and watched Bboy break dance on YouTube, then watched him attempt to play Pathwords on my facebook account, then watched him play some free internet games before I finally told him it might be time for him to go back downstairs.

Final Visa Run

Yesterday was my last visa run to Cambodia. It was a bit sad, though I really didn't have much time to think about it, since I had a seatmate with whom I talked most of the ride. We had some really interesting discussion about the reality of God and His love for us. I'm praying God uses our conversation to accomplish His purposes.

At the border, I met all my little friends who love to ask for money. I had come prepared with a fair amount of loose change, but I quickly saw there was no way to divide the money fairly. These children had no interest in staying in a line and coming only once.:)

Finally, one boy said I should throw the money in the air and let them run after it. I thought that was a good idea and promptly did just that. But I still had some change in my little purse reserved for the children on the Thailand side.

It was raining a bit when I crossed back to the Thailand side, and I had left my umbrella in the bus. I thought I would simply get a little wet as I headed for the restrooms. It didn't take long, however, for a young girl to approach me with her shabby little umbrella, and she shared that little umbrella with me as I walked. I had to duck a bit to stay under it, but no big deal.:)

About 3 or 4 other children ran over to accompany us on our journey to the restroom. They waited till I came back out, and then I shared the little bit of money I had left. One little guy didn't get any, but the others insisted he had got more than his share earlier, and he didn't deny it.:) He seemed to brighten up when I asked to take a picture with them. Here we are!:)
beggarkids.jpg

They then walked me back to the bus, and I boarded amidst a chorus of goodbyes. They're such cute kids. What does the future hold for them...??

Teaching English

Wow, I am just realizing how much English I am beginning to teach, even with the many no-shows. I have a Monday evening class, a Tuesday evening class, a Wednesday afternoon class, a Saturday afternon class, as well as a time set apart to teach Gop (the apartment manager's 12-year-old) and now Noy (the 18-year-old across the street).

My Monday evening and Tuesday evening classes may begin to mesh together, as several students talk about coming to both classes, even if they just listen in on the more difficult class. So we'll see what happens.

Here is last night's class:
monclass.jpg

And here is tonight's class. They were in rare form tonight, laughing and being silly about who knows what (literally, since a lot of it was in Thai in between the English:).
tuesclass.jpg

People from tonight's class also came laden with gifts. One girl brought me 3 beautiful red roses, and another girl brought me a little wicker basket and a snack. I am being pampered!

Of Fun, Food, and Fellowship

This weekend has been fairly full of activites. Friday after lunch I stopped over at the neighbors to say hi. Uncle and Aunt are always happy to see me; I know I haven't gone often enough to visit them. This time quite a few others were sitting around visiting as well.

As I was sitting at the table drinking the sprite they gave me, their huge cat jumped up on the table, and Luung (Uncle) poured out some cat food on for the "obviously starving" cat (no sarcasm there:).
kittyfood.jpg

Here are the ladies joining the conversation.
neighbors.jpg

A little bit later, the ice cream cart came by, and before I knew it, Noy, the 18-year-old boy on the left, had bought me an ice cream cone. I love that ice cream, so it was no hardship to eat it.:) Noy, by the way, is the young man who I am told has cancer. But, Thai style, that info is being kept from him to keep him from getting depressed. I am planning to start teaching him English this week; he is excited about that. I am considering using a Bible story or two as part of the curriculum.
neighbors1.jpg

Friday night Anita, Candice, and I celebrated Candice's birthday by getting massages and then dinner at the Coffee Beans Restaurant in Bangkok. Coffee Beans has wonderful food, including a host of gourmet desserts.

Our main course was lasagne, caesar salad, and garlic bread.
cbd1.jpg

Our desserts were coffee, brownie cheesecake and--I forget the name of my cheesecake. But it was absolutely luscious! I think it was some sort of special white chocolate cheesecake.
cbd2.jpg

Saturday morning I had breakfast with Jerome, a guy from the French Mennonite Church, and Dan. Jerome was on his way to Chiang Mai, where he is volunteering at an orphanage; but before he left Bangkok, he wanted to meet up with other Mennonites in the area. We had a very nice time talking together before he needed to head for the airport again. Sorry, I forgot to take a picture.

Saturday afternoon I taught my English class at Promise Baptist Church. This group of students is a lot of fun, and the two-hour class passed quickly.

Saturday evening I met with my friend Kwan at Seacon Square, the huge mall not too far from where I live. Kwan is so much fun. We walked around the mall arm-in-arm and sometimes hand-in-hand (Thai style), giggling and laughing together like a couple of teenagers. She brings out the kid in me.:) We finally decided on a place to eat--just the foodcourt--after checking out almost every other restaurant on the 4th floor.

This morning Gop (the manager's 12-year-old son) came up to study English for an hour, then stayed another hour playing games on my computer. His mom came up at 12:00 with a tasty snack that was so filling it turned into lunch for me.

Later this afternoon my friends Nun and Lek picked me up to go to another little concert at Seri Center. The same group was there as before.:) I had to laugh at how some of the Thai people got up and motioned to the lead singer to come to the edge of the stage so they could tip him a couple hundred baht. This happened several times throughout the afternoon.

Tonight after I got home, my friend Dtaa came to visit me and to bring me a gift from her older sister whom I have met only once or twice! Below is the picture of the beautiful little purse and change purse she made.

Another Little Big Experience

So tonight Anita and I met our friends Tawan and Payao at The LIttle Big for supper. They brought another friend, Nid, along as well. Nid says she will be going to New Jersey for 1 or 2 years as a nanny for a single mom there who has adopted 4 Vietnamese and Chinese children, or something like that. At any rate, Nid is going through some sort of exchange program.

I am excited that maybe I can meet up with her occasionally after I am back in the US (though I still don't know how long I may stay in the US).

We had a good time talking and laughing together, like usual.:) I wish it were possible to see these friends more often. In the picture below, Nid is the girl next to me.
biglittleouting.jpg

Tomorrow is actually a free day for me. I am excited to catch up on some things. Then, in the evening, Anita and I want to take Candice out for her birthday. Maybe I can post some pictures of that!:)

Samitivej's 29th

Today I went in to the hospital to get my eye checked, as it has been more cloudy the last two weeks. I received a good report; in fact, my vision in that eye is now 20/20!:) The doctor says the haze is still debris from the infection but that my eye itself is free from infection. So I will continue to wait out the haziness.:)

While I was at the hospital, I noticed a huge "cake" celebrating Samitivej's 29th year of operations (no pun intended!!:).
Samitivej29.jpg

I also went to say hi to my infectious diseases specialist, Dr. Onumar. She is so sweet and so fun. She grabbed my hands and told me "when" I return to Thailand I will need to stay for 10 years.:) Then she told me the next time I am in the area to stop by and see her again because she wants to give me something. She spoils me! But I love her.:)

Blessed with Friends

This weekend I have been reminded of the many friends God has given me here in Thailand. Yesterday I taught English to a group of 6 people at the church in Pak Nam. They are such a fun group; the next 5 weeks will go by quickly. I forgot to get a picture of the class--maybe next Saturday.

Saturday evening, I was invited down to floor 4 of my apartment building, where 2 prospective students stay. I enjoyed a nice meal with them and had fun chatting and looking at some of their photo albums. They will probably study English at my apartment on Monday evenings.

Here they are, Pop (Bob) and Kun (Goon)
PopKun.jpg

And here are Kun and me:)
KunMe.jpg

Today I had coffee with Anita, also a very nice time. Sorry, no pics of us.:) And when I returned home, I talked with a few of my street vendor friends while I ate supper.

I was hardly in my room when Nui, who lives on 2nd floor and practices her English with me every week, brought me some soup her mom had made this weekend. Then we sat and chatted a while.

Next was Gop and his mother, Ruung, part of the manager's family. Gop is 12 years old, and he has been learning some English as well. Gop came running into my room and asked to play "that English word game" on my computer. I almost forgot that a few months ago, he had come in one time when I was playing Scramble on Facebook, and he wanted his turn at trying.

So tonight, I introduced him to another Facebook game, Pathwords. He liked that one even better than scramble. No matter that he knows very few actual words; he kept trying till he hit a correct spelling. His mom finally got tired of waiting for him to get done, so she went back downstairs, and Gop stayed another hour till his mom called up for him about 10 pm.:) I had just told him I needed to get ready for bed soon.

I am amazed by the way he just loves to hang out in my room when he has the occasion. In between working on the computer, he would run around the room exploring. Then he discovered my little flashlight, so he started shining it on people outside on the street below. Fortunately, the beam was not very powerful, so they never noticed, but Gop had a great time. Again, no pictures, but I find myself enjoying days like this where I am home for people to just drop in. It doesn't happen often enough.
