Back to Normal Life

Today I went in to The Well a bit late, and everyone was disappointed that I did not yet have prints of their many pictures from Thursday. I told them I will bring them on this coming Thursday, so if I don't, I will be in hot water!:)

While at The Well today, I was invited to a wedding to be held there on Sunday. Staff from The Well have been working with this girl and her boyfriend for some time, and now they want to get married. I am excited to get to be there for the occasion.

After leaving Center 1, I went to Center 2, where they run a beauty salon, among other things. The last time I had my hair colored there, I was very impressed with the results. This time I asked the girl if she remembered the color from last time. I thought she remembered, but from the results this time, I'm not so sure she did. It is REALLY DARK. The first picture is me with my hair dresser. But when I got home and looked at myself in the mirror, I TRULY felt the difference, and that is the second picture. Ah well, it's only color; the gray will come through eventually with this color too.:)

So, as I scrambled to get home in time to teach an English class in my room, I met my two little friends on my soi who want me to teach them English. They always call out to me now when they see me. They are ages 8 and 11, I believe. Anyway, I chatted with them a bit, but before I was finished talking with them, another gal came riding bike and stopped to talk. I really don't know how she knows me, but she obviously did, because she knew my name.

As it turned out, I now have a new Tuesday evening student, to make a total of 3 when they all show up.:) I happened to have an extra book on hand, which she decided to buy, so I think she is serious about studying. I am happy to have Dtaa join the group; it is nice to have a more than just one or two, but not too many more.

I wonder what tomorrow holds???:)

Phuket--Part 2

Sunday morning we headed to the church nearby, where Anita and I were invited to share a Bible story in English with the children in Sunday School. We had decided to have them help act out the story of Peter and John and the lame man at the temple. Absolutely no one volunteered, and when I asked one guy to help, he shook his head no, so we just read the story and then taught them a song to go with it.

After the children's service, which is actually a community outreach, the children were served pizza and ice cream floats to celebrate some birthdays. Anita and I were each given a piece of very delicious Pizza Co. pizza.:) Mmmm, haven't had pizza in months!

The church service started at 11:00, and Anita and I enjoyed the very musical service. Below are videos of some of that music.

Gye Hwa's husband preached a sermon about Hannah and Samuel; a young translator was assigned to help understand the message. I have a picture of her later. Here is Pastor Lee.
phuket12.jpg

After the service, everyone ate lunch together. Anita and I were assigned to a table with our young translator, a really sweet gal who speaks excellent English. As we sat there, a young guy who played violin beautifully (and played on the worship team) joined us, fiddling around on a guitar. At our request, he retrieved his violin and played us some numbers. He says he started taking lessons at age 7; he is now 19 and getting bored with violin.:) He also plays piano, cello, and a bunch of other stringed instruments. Below are two videos of him playing violin, the first number is "Nearer My God to Thee", and the second is a favorite of his that he said is jazz??.

Here we are with Sanho and Hae-in. They are really sweet young people.
phuket13.jpg

When we finally packed into the car, Gye Hwa and her husband drove us to a latex mattress store owned by some friends of theirs. The business is currently not open; other businesses in the community have been making problems for them, as I understood. But they are devout Christians and are praying about what to do.

They also have a small church that meets in the back of their store. It is a Burmese church; we were told that many Burmese immigrants have come to Phuket to find work, but that the companies they work for do not allow married couples to live together; men must stay together and women must stay together. However, this Korean couple has a few rooms that they provide for Burmese couples to live in. (I'm not sure I understand all the details because our conversations were in Thai and some broken English.:)

At any rate, I believe the reason we stopped at the store was so these friends could tell us how to get to a beautiful lookout point. They ended up piling into the car with us, and off we went. The first place we stopped is where this picture was taken.
phuket14.jpg

From there we drove twisty, windy roads that eventually brought us up to where the following pictures were taken.
phuket15.jpg

phuket16.jpg

phuket17.jpg

phuket18.jpg

phuket19.jpg

phuket20.jpg

phuket21.jpg

After hiking around for maybe an hour, we headed for home. Well, first we had to drop off the Korean family who helped us, and then we had to go pick up one of the children at someone's home, and then we had to pick up the other son at his friend's home, and then we stopped to eat supper at a Korean restaurant run by another church member. What a spread! But I didn't take any pictures of it, so you're spared from viewing yet another food pic.:)

Once at home we each simply relaxed and did our own thing, but right before everyone went to bed, I did manage to get a family picture. These are my dear friends, Gye Hwa and Bong Woo with their family.
phuket22.jpg

That's pretty much the trip! We were taken to the airport this morning and arrived back in Samut Prakan about 11:00 am. It was a wonderful time, and Anita is a great travel companion.

Phuket-Part 1

Early Friday morning Anita and I took a taxi to Suvarnabumi Airport, where we boarded a plane for Phuket, a major tourist destination, and also now famous because of the tsunami 3 years ago.

Korean friends that I met during language school are missionaries to the Korean community in Phuket, so we were able to stay with them. Bong Woo and Gye Hwa were overly abundantly gracious in hosting us in spite of their busy schedule.

Gye Hwa picked us up at the airport on Friday morning, and on the way to their home, we stopped at the little Korean church where her husband was teaching a group of Korean teenagers. Bong Woo asked Anita and me to introduce ourselves, after which the class told us their names and ages. They all spoke some degree of English.
phuket1.jpg

From the church we headed a short distance to their house, where we settled in and then immediately dressed for the beach. Gye Hwa and her friend decided they would take us to a Patong Beach, a huge tourist attraction. They dropped us off there, leaving a Korean lunch with us--something akin to sushi (we were told if we waited too long, they would go bad), and told us to call when we were ready to be picked up.

So by about 1:00 PM, we were already on the beach! Was it ever CROWDED!! And the sun was very direct; it didn't take me long to rent a parasol/chair to provide some shade. I've been (literally) burnt once too often to want to repeat that scenario.:)

Below are a few views of Patong Beach from where I was sitting.
phuket2.jpg

See the towels in the distance, between the pink and purple rows of umbrellas? That was where Anita decided to set up sunburning.:)
phuket3.jpg

We stayed until about 4:00, then called Gye Hwa to come pick us up. But while we were in the area, we booked a tour for Saturday at Raya Island. This tour included pick-up service at place of residence, so we were happy not to inconvenience Gye Hwa and her husband.

Friday evening the family took us out to a Thai restaurant for supper, and then they took us to a spa, owned by a member of their church. Anita and I splurged (paid about $11 instead of the usual $5) to try an oil massage, as neither of us had ever had one before. It felt really good, but we both came to the conclusion that we will stick to normal Thai massage in the future.:) Now we know!

The next morning, we were picked up by a taxi driver and taken to the meeting point for our excursion to Raya Island. We boarded a speed boat, and 30 minutes later, we arrived at the Raya Beach. It was a much smaller beach with much less people, though it did get fuller as the day went on.

The next three pictures, if you were to put them side by side, give you a picture of the location. Beautiful!
phuket5.jpg

phuket4.jpg

phuket6.jpg

The waves were gentle, the water refreshing, and the sand soft (unless you happened to stumble upon a piece of coral. And we got to go snorkeling! Another first for me. After an hour on the beach, we got back on the boat, which then took us to two different places to do some snorkeling. Not being a strong swimmer, I opted to use a life jacket and was still almost scared to jump into the water.

But once I was in and knew how to use my equipment, I had a great time. Wow, seeing the sea life below the surface is mind-boggling! One place had schools of yellow and black striped fish swimming back and forth. I kept trying--unsuccessfully--to touch one as it passed.:)

At another place were huge fish, some blue and yellow, some black and red; as well as some sort of lizards that blended in with the brown coral on which they rested. Anyway, let's just say I very much enjoyed that time. Anita has a picture of me in the water as proof that I really did it. When I get a copy, I'll post it.:) Until then, the pictures below will have to do.
phuket7.jpg

phuket8.jpg

After snorkeling at two locations, we headed back to the beach to get some lunch at a little restaurant about 15 minutes' walking distance away. It was a cute little place, and we had delicious food--more than enough. Below is the view from where I was sitting. I like the colors.
phuket9.jpg

After lunch we had a couple more hours to spend at the beach. It was a really fun, relaxing day.

When we returned home, we had some time to shower and relax until supper time. Gye Hwa and two of her friends had gone grocery shopping. When they returned, they proceeded to prepare a delicious Vietnamese meal for us. It was actually a new experience for Gye Hwa, too; she had never made this meal before.

One of the ingredients was a can of pineapple; Gye Hwa apparently didn't have a can opener, so she rigged up her own "can opener"--looked a bit dangerous to me!:)
phuket10.jpg

We had rice wraps that needed to soak in hot water for a few seconds, after which we could put a variety of ingredients on before wrapping it up: pineapple, peanuts, ham, crab, apple, carrots, onions, peppers, tomatoes, bean sprouts, avocado, rice noodles, and a spicy vinagrette sauce to add as desired. YUMMMMMM!

phuket11.jpg

So ended our first full day in Phuket. Anita and I were both feeling a bit sore from the sun, so we retired early that evening.

One More Picture Day at The Well:)

Today Ashley and Deanna accompanied me to The Well. A group of Australian young adults were spending their last day there after volunteering for 2 weeks, so they were busy saying goodbyes. Because of that, it turned into another major picture-taking day. And, of course, Ashley and Deanna were included in the pictures as well. And even I got in on some of them, though I was mainly the photographer.:)

Following are not even half of the pictures taken today.

The whole group with the Australians.

What a bunch of sweethearts!

(On a completely different note, I will be in Phuket from Friday till Monday, so I will not be posting any blogs those days. But when I come back, of course I will have report on my trip!:)

You Never Know What's Happening Next!

Today the guys at The Shelter bequeathed me with a gazillion or so mangoes. There is no way I can eat all of them, so I decided I need to give some away. I went out on the street to buy my supper, and when I came back to my room, I saw the door next to my apartment was open, and a girl inside invited me in to chat. It turns out her name is Joy, my middle name.

When I returned to my room, I remembered the mangoes, and decided to offer some to her. She was in the middle of cooking supper for some of her friends, 2 of whom were already there. Of course, they insisted I stay to eat with them, but I tried to tell them that I already had supper. Let's just say it didn't work.:0 We had a marvelous time sitting and eating and attempting to carry on a conversation.
neighbors 1.jpg

neighbors 2.jpg

As we were eating, my two students arrived for English class. Of course, they got invited right in too, and we were there until about 8:00 before we managed to excuse ourselves to walk back next door to study English. By 10:00 we finished studying, and I walked my two friends out.

When I returned upstairs, the party next door was still going on, so I ended up rejoining the group for about 45 minutes. Two more guests had arrived: the boyfriend of Joy, and his older brother. Joy's boyfriend had had more than enough to drink; he kept trying to ask me questions, and they kept telling me he was "ngom", or something like that. I think it has the idea of being a bit inebriated.

At any rate, I really enjoyed mingling with them. I hope that we can continue to build a friendship. They all were really sweet. neighbors 3.jpg

Celebration #3

We've been trying to have "celebration meetings" once a month. A celebration meeting is basically a joint meeting of any small groups that are forming. So far we have one or two small groups happening through Dan and Raul's outreach.

Today we had our third celebration in Bang Bo, about an hour from where I live. We met in Wana and Utai's new home, where we ate lunch together, then sang and studied the Bible together.

Once again, we had quite the spread. If anyone went hungry it was their own fault!
cel1.jpg

cel2.jpg

cel3.jpg

cel4.jpg

cel5.jpg

Raul is being goofy as he leaves the house.:) You should hear him talk with Colleen sometimes. Since Colleen knows Spanish quite fluently, Raul loves to talk Spanish with her. We like to kid him that he talks too much.:) But the truth is, he has about 2 or 3 people with whom he can talk his native language and doesn't speak a lot of English, so he needs to talk Spanish when he has the opportunity!
cel6.jpg

I was planning on going home and taking a nap after our meeting, as I was expecting to teach English at 7 pm to Gop (Frog), the younger son of the apartment manager. But no nap was to take place. They nabbed me the minute I walked in the door; I think they spotted me on the security cameras as I approached the building.:)

So they ushered me straight into the office, where they offered me snacks and a drink. Then Gop sat down next to me to have his English lesson. He is studying for an entrance test to our equivalent of 6th grade, I think. The first part of the test takes place on Tuesday, so now he is cramming.:)

Ruung, Gop's mom, made supper for me, and then I studied some more with Gop. I think I finally got to my apartment about 9:00 tonight. But they are such sweet family. They asked me to study with him again tomorrow evening, so I will revise my schedule to include that.

On that note, I think I will close; it is now past 11:30 and past my bedtime.:)

Sky Train Traffic

Below is a video of people swarming down the sky train steps on Valentine's Evening. If you look close, you can see several people carrying flowers. And in the background is a DJ promoting Valentine's Day in the little plaza behind me.

Lovey and Dovey #2

Well, I guess I was wrong about these birds. Dovey is now sitting on a nest of 2 eggs! She gets a bit nervous when she sees me moving around inside, but now she even stays sitting on her nest when I come to the sliding doors to open/close them.

Once she flew away; that's when I was able to get a picture of her eggs.:)
ld1.jpg

ld2.jpg

ld3.jpg

I haven't seen Mr. Lovey around. Unless he takes his turn at sitting on the nest???? Anybody know dove habits?

Valentine's Eve

I've wanted to do a blog about the wonderful Valentine's Eve that The REACH team gave to the team. It all started because they were to babysit Clair and Eliza while Tom and Candice had "date night" to celebrate Valentine's Day.

So in addition to caring for Clair and Eliza, the REACHers decided to give the rest of us a special evening as well. We sat at a beautifully decorated table, complete with handmade Valentines acting as place cards. And we ate by candlelight.
v-2.jpg

We had a delicious "maak-maak"!!! meal of parmesan boneless chicken breasts, mashed potatoes, gravy, mixed veggies, and homemade rolls. I think I'm leaving something out. We had coffee and a Costa Rican style dessert in honor of our Costa Rican team member, Raul. I forget what it was called, but it was also WONDERFUL! It was a yellow cake soaked in a sweet sauce and topped with whipped cream. Yummmmm!!
v-3.jpg

OH, and Raul, bless his heart, gave each of us a Valentine's gift. He's a good guy!:) Here's my gift: red silk rose plus pink princess pen (so named by Clair)
v-3.1.jpg

I think we all ate until we were stuffed to the max. Then we sat around the table for quite a while chatting, laughing, and being silly together.
v-4.jpg

v-5.jpg

v-6.jpg

Oh my, I really enjoy having the REACHers here. They are serious about getting involved in ministry here, but they also bring life and energy and enthusiasm. I love that.

February 14, 2008

Happy Valentine's Day....????

Tonight I am a bundle of emotions. The REACH team, Anita, and I went to have orientation with Celeste, from The Well, regarding bar visitation. Then she took us to 3 or 4 streets chock full of bars. She showed us the street known to have more of a brothel set-up, where the men just go upstairs with the woman they choose. And she told us which street had the sadistic-masochistic brothels, where they offer "two for the price of one".

And she showed us a horseshoe shape street that had a 3-floor building full of all kinds of bars, including a few ladyboy bars and sex show businesses. We walked through there in twos and threes and stopped to talk to a few people who were preparing for a busy night in a couple hours. Several girls called us over, and we had a fun little chat with them. Then we walked past a ladyboy being made up for the night. He was very friendly as well, and invited us to his show at the ladyboy bar later on in the evening. These people are hungry for love and are not finding it in what they do. I could just weep for these people.

As far as the amount of bar workers in one of the main redlight districts in Bangkok, they estimate at least 8,000 people. This is not in a terribly large area of the city, but is in one of the sections where westerners like to go....

So anyway, that is my evening, and I am crying as I write about it. The starvation for love and their need for Jesus just gets me. Sorry to have such a sober entry on this special day....

Love Doves

Meet Lovey and Dovey, the new tenants of my biggest tree. We'll see how long they keep building their nest so close to a human who keeps moving around inside and insists on watching them.:) The last tenants decided enough was enough and moved out just as their nest was about completed.

Stay tuned for the next episode of Lovey and Dovey (which could quite possibly be the season finale!:).

Weekend Events

Friday I went the "scenic route" to Parkland, a community where I have some friends, mostly farang, but also one Thai friend. I wasn't watching quickly enough and missed my Lemon Tree gas station where I was to get off the bus and ended up at Ram 2.

When I got off the bus at Ram 2, I asked some girls how to get to "Happyland" instead of Parkland. Now, Happyland is in an entirely different area of town, and as I got back on the bus I was told to take, I suddenly knew I had said the wrong area, but couldn't remember the real name (Parkland). So I jumped off the bus, crossed the road, and called my friend Lee to ask the correct name (which, of course, was Parkland).

Well, I still had no idea what I did wrong, so I hailed a taxi. But when I asked the driver to take me to Parkland, he said he had no idea where that was, could I call a Thai friend and put her on the phone with him. So I called Lee back and had her put our friend Rin on the phone. I immediately heard the taxi driver say, "OH, Bpaaglen!" (I obvioulsy had not pronounced it "correctly":). As he got off the phone, he pointed a couple hundred yards behind us and said, "You can walk to 'Bpaaglen' from here; it's right over there!" OK, that saved me a taxi fee, though I would've paid him just for his time (but he would have none of that).

So I walked the short distance to my friend Lee's apartment, where I arrived about 2 hours late, to laminate some English teaching materials on her laminator. Rin came back over after a bit, and the three of us worked together on the project. By 6:00 we still had quite a ways to go, but we decided to call it quits for the day.

We then walked out to a little restaurant close by where we ate supper. As we were eating, the Malone family, who also lives in that community, showed up for supper as well, so we moved to a bigger table and had a fun time eating and chatting together.

For some reason, they didn't trust me to get home taking a bus; they insisted on seeing that I got a taxi. Which, they said, would help them sleep easier.:)
wknd1.jpg

On Saturday I taught my 2 English classes at the church in Paaknam from 10-4. Then that evening I met my friend Kwan for supper, after which we came back to my apartment for a "sleepover". She is so cute and so fun, and I was happy to see her make herself right at home in my apartment. I was also very excited to have a good talk with her after we had turned out the lights and said goodnight to each other a milion times.:)

This morning Anita met us here, and we took the bus to Seri Center, where Kwan connected with another bus, and Anita and I were to meet the rest of the team. But before parting ways, we took a couple pictures together.:)
wknd2.jpg

wknd3.jpg

So, when our team had gathered, we took a songtaew to Ram 9 Park to have team church. What a beautiful setting for worshipping God.
wknd4.jpg

Eliza and I had some photogenic moments. Well, at least Eliza did.:) I don't feel very photogenic when I am hot and sweaty, especially in muggy weather like today.:) But in addition to the pics below, we got our pictures taken with a Thai girl who was having her graduation pictures taken at the park.:0
wknd6.jpg

wknd5.jpg

After church, we ate at the S & P Restaurant in the park. Air conditioning-yea! I ordered an omelet with rice, and when my platter came, I thought the little heart-shaped plate of rice was cute.:)
wknd7.jpg

Raul kindly took a couple pictures for me of some of the group (since I was trapped in a corner). One of those pictures is below.
wknd9.jpg

I arrived back to my apartment and had a few hours to relax and take a nap before heading downstairs to the office for a birthday supper for Rak, who turned 17 yesterday. It is always fun to eat with the family in the office. And tonight, Noy, the landlord's wife, and their two sons, Earth and Ink, joined us.
wknd10.1.jpg

Tomorrow I am unsure what will be happening. Pok, a lady Anita and I met in Korat over the New Year, called and said she wants to visit us tomorrow, but so far I have no idea what time she wants to come, and there are about two or three other things that might be happening, depending on when she comes. Such is life in Thailand. Sabai, sabai!:)

Chinese New Year

Today was the Chinese New Year. I happened to be near a mall in Sala Daeng this morning, where some festivites were taking place. I've got two pictures and a video. Enjoy!

Speaking of Karaoke...

Jum, a former English student of mine, and her husband have returned to Thailand from Norway for a visit. So tonight, she invited a group of friends out to eat, and I was privileged to be on her list. As the night progressed, a few people began the karaoke thing, though it felt really mellow.

Pictured below...

Good Day

Tuesdays tend to feel pretty full because I have a morning activity, afternoon activity, and evening acitivity. I studied Thai, then went to the Well. All my pictures are from The Well. The girls today went stir crazy borrowing my camera! I think they took a total of 73 pictures of each other! I think I will weed a few of them out so I don't have an out-of-this-world developing bill to pay!

Such a happy family!

And here is Boom, the dear girl whom I didn't recognize last week! She still isn't letting me hear the end of it!:)

I had to laugh at this girl's T-shirt.:) Since I just looked at the site and realized you can't read the shirt, I'll tell you what it says: "Don't drink dirty water." :)
welle.jpg

This little group is all related. Word about The Well often gets out through family connections.
wellf.jpg

When I returned home tonight, I had about an hour till time to teach my little English class in my apartment. I still had two students tonight, but one of the regulars cancelled. In her place, Rak, the teenage son of the apartment manager, showed up. I think his dad made him come. But he seemed to have a good time, so hopefully it won't be a drag for him.

I also received a birthday dinner invitation from Rak. He is turning 17 on Sunday. It will be fun to be with his family again. They are special people.

My Neighborhood

Now that I have only about 7 more months to go, I decided to video a tiny bit of my neighborhood, though mostly capitalizing on traffic.

Facing Soi Srisamit, my street, across the big road known as Theparak Rd. The second building down from the first tall corner building is my apartment building, where I live on the fifth floor. (It's not exactly easy to see.:)
Soi Srisamit 010.jpg

Next are 3 video clips I took today regarding traffic. The first one is standing across Theparak Road prior to crossing it. The next two are actually crossing the busy street. I like to take my cues from other Thais; I feel safe crossing with them.:)

PS Remember the totally irrelevant entry? Of the ones who responded, Terri hit the nail on the head! How'd you do that, Terri????:)

New Idea!

Are you burned out with ideas for ladies' outings? Here's a new one. One I bet you never thought of! Why not have a karaoke party? A women's group from the nearby Baptist church do just that! I'm told someone from the church has a special room at their house fixed with lights and sound system, and the ladies LOVE to come over for karaoke. So there you have it!:) Enjoy!
